Workshop/ afternoon course

Time – 12:30 – 4:30 pm [4 hours]

Level – suited to those with some experience of painting with watercolours. Not suitable for total beginners

This afternoon workshop examines ways to handle both your brush and paint to say more with less.

During this afternoon workshop Jason will:

Provide inspirational images, flowers and vases.

Demonstrate methods of brush handling to portray flowers and glass with a limited number of marks.

Discuss with you the image/ flowers you intend to paint and help you plan the stages needed to make a stunning watercolour.

In addition, Jason will paint alongside you, showing how he would work on a similar painting, taking you through the stages of its production.

Free tea and coffee are provided

What will you need to bring ?

Your watercolour painting kit, including:

Watercolour paper

Palette

Water pots

Paints

Brushes

Masking tape

Palette knife

Pencil

Drawing board.

Stencil brush

Any images of flowers or real flowers you would like to work from.

Jason has some photographs you can work from, but you may wish to work from your own reference. He will also provide some flowers and garden foliage with accompanying vases to work from.

Is there public transport to Wylam?

Yes – There is a railway station in Wylam situated next to the River Tyne on the opposite bank to Wylam main village. The walk from the station is about a quarter of a mile.

Is there parking near to the institute?

Free parking can be found directly outside the institute and in nearby streets.

What will you do in the afternoon workshop

12:30 Welcome – set up your kit and grab a free cup of tea or coffee

12:40 Demonstration of various methods of brush handling to attempt, and practice.

1:00 Explore ideas shown in exercises

1:30 Begin to work from your chosen photograph or flower arrangement

1:45 Jason begins painting demonstration of flowers in a vase, to provide guidance regarding layering and tuning this type of painting. Students begin to follow ideas shown or adapt methods to suit their own images.

2:15 Tea or coffee break while first layer of paint dries

2:30 Jason continues to demonstrate the various stages required to complete a painting of flowers in a vase. He will help you individually construct your own painting and think through the various stages of your picture to make the best image possible.

4:15 Finish off artwork and discuss the work as a group with a cuppa

4:30 End of workshop
