Level – suited to those with some experience of painting. Not suitable for total beginners

In this afternoon workshop we will explore a variety of ways that a palette knife can be make useful effects using watercolour. For example, the light marks in the rocks found in the foreground of this coastal scene have been made with a palette knife by pushing the paint off the paper while it was still damp. Learn how to paint trees, grasses, rocks and even roof tiles with this useful tool.

During this afternoon workshop Jason will:

Provide inspirational images

Demonstrate various methods of using a palette knife to make useful marks and effects.

Show you how to utalise some of the effects shown within watercolours.

Discuss with you the image intend to paint and help you plan the stages needed to make a bold watercolour.

In addition, he will paint alongside you, showing how he would work on a similar painting, taking you through the stages of it’s production.

Free tea and coffee are provided

What will you need to bring ?

Your watercolour painting kit, including:

Paper 

Palette

Water pots

Paints

Brushes

Masking tape

Palette knife

Scissors

Pencil

Drawing board.

Any images you would like to work from.

Jason has some photographs you can work from, but you may wish to work from your own reference material.

Is there public transport to Wylam?

Yes – There is a railway station in Wylam situated next to the River Tyne on the opposite bank to Wylam main village. The walk from the station is about a quarter of a mile.

Is there parking near to the institute?

Free parking can be found directly outside the institute and in nearby streets.

What will you do in the afternoon workshop

12:30 Welcome – set up your kit and grab a free cup of tea or coffee

12:40 Demonstration of the marks that can be made with a palette knife.

1:00 Explore ideas shown

1:40 Jason begins a painting demonstrations exploring palette knife use, to provide guidance regarding layering and tuning this type of painting. Students begin to follow ideas shown or adapt methods to suit their own images.

2:15 Tea or coffee break while first layer of paint dries

2:30 Jason continues to demonstrate a working on his painting incorperating palette knife methods. He will help you individually construct your own painting and think through the various stages of your picture to make the best image possible.

4:15 Finish off artwork and discuss the work as a group with a cuppa

4:30 End of workshop
