Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as a watercolour painter ?
Learning to paint trees well, so that they add life and increase the rhythmn in your paintings, is a key step in up-grading the quality of your landscapes. Trees are often the weakest link in many painters work. Stiff and awkward, they slow down the flow of paintings, so it’s important that you gain the skills to make a trees a strength rather than a weakness in your pictures.
Painting trees, like painting the sea, has been a key subject in my work for many years. Childhood memories of playing in the woods near my Grandmas house still loom large in my imagination. Imposing, elemental, always moving and changing the light, they seemed alive like characters in a fairy tale when I was a child. Which perhaps explains why I return to painting them again and again, trying to capture something of the magic I felt as a child. In this quest for the ‘magical’ I have explored a huge range of approaches to painting trees and foliage and honed my understanding of the key visual triggers that make the marks you make become trees in the viewers imagination.
So, this is a course that will show you the key skills required to paint effective trees and will offer you a raft of ideas which you could use so that you can begin painting trees in a way that is releveant to you and your art.
Newcastle Arts Centre offers you some of the best art studio facilities in the North East region. It also has on site an art shop, a craft shop, an art gallery, a framer and The Jazz Café to relax in and grab a coffee and bite to eat after class.

What will you do on the course?
Jason will show you how to control your brush work so that you can stop drawing your trees and simply paint them with the brush. Common usable shapes and formats of trees will be explored using the brush, as well as useful colour mixes. You will discuss focus, grading marks so that you know where to vary types of brushwork to best effect. Ways of shorthanding detail will be explored, as well as common compositional patterns used by artists to help make trees recede into the distance. The value of working from cold to warm colours to amplify distance will be illustrated. You will create a finished tree painting towards the end of the ten weeks.
What will you need to bring?
Your watercolour painting kit including: drawing paper, palette, water pots, paints, brushes, masking tape, kitchen roll and a pencil and pen.
Jason will advise you each week about the materials you will need for the following session. Anyone unable to attend a lesson should contact him by email and he will advise them on the papers needed for the following class.
You are advised to bring several sheets of low cost drawing paper to paint on at the first session – we will be learning to paint trunks and branches with the brush.
